Sakshi Malik wins the first Olympic bronze medal by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler. The whole country was eagerly waiting for India to grab a medal in Rio Olympics, when Sakshi Malik surprised the country with her bronze medal. Sakshi wins the hearts of millions by beating Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova in women’s freestyle 58 kg wrestling category on early Wednesday, 17th August, IST at Rio de Janeiro. After tracking 0-5 by halftime, Sakshi made a brilliant comeback in the second phase with 8-5, thus making an amazing bronze medal win!

History is thus created when Sakshi achieves in becoming India’s first woman wrestler to conquer Olympic medal and also country’s fourth woman athlete to grab the bronze medal in world’s largest sporting event at Rio Games. She is a 23-year-old girl from Rohtak, Haryana, also a silver medalist at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014, and also a bronze winner at Inc heon Asian Games 2014, and now again a bronze winner at Rio Olympics, 2016 as she accomplishes an impressive throwback win over her opponent Aisuluu to create a bang-on history.

Sakshi Malik’s Marvelous Win

Sakshi when being penalized for compliance, Tynybekova attained the first point. Then Aisuluu went on to get four extra points for 2 take-downs. With this, the first phase came to an end with trail of Malik at 0-5. In the second phase Sakshi roared like a lioness as she fought back superbly by succeeding the score by 5-5, and further went ahead in securing three additional points. She finally closed the wrestling bout by 8-5 in the last few minutes, and winning the first medal for India at 2016 Rio Olympics.

Repechage Round

It was a magnificent twists and turns for Malik. Sakshi Malik lost out to Russia’s Valeria Koblova in Quarter-finals, which made Koblova reach into the final. This placed Sakshi in the course of repechage round. Then Sakshi beat Mongolia’s Orkhon Purevdorj by 12-3 during repechage round to move ahead in playing against Aisuluu. Malik thrashed Aisuluu of Kyrgyzstan 8-5 to win the bronze medal.

Olympics Winning History

The first wrestler from India was KD Jadhav at Helsinki Games 1952 to win bronze medal. The second wrestling bronze medal was won by Sushil Kumar at Beijing Olympics Game 2008. In London Olympics, Sushil Kumar won a silver medal, and Yogeshwar Dutt clinched a bronze medal. Unfortunately Sushil Kumar couldn’t make it to Rio Olympics 2016 because of a controversy surrounding him.

Weight-lifter Karnam Malleshwari clinched the bronze medal during Sydney games 2000, as she became the first Indian woman to be the triumphant of Olympic medal for the country.

Boxer MC Marykom as well as Shuttler Saina Nehwal bagged a bronze medal each at London Games 2012.

When fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogan had to exit out due to fateful ligament tear in her right knee at quarterfinal bout, Sakshi descended in showing her winning side at last. So finally India’s fifth wrestling medal went to Sakshi Malik in Rio Olympics. Also this is country’s 25th medal won in Olympics Games!
