The game of IPL used to be a huge roadblock for the Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GECs) as IPL season every year ruled over the Hindi soaps with tremendous popularity of cricket fan-followings; to the extent it shut the luck of prime-time soaps. GECs avoided launching their shows during this IPL phase of April and May. Since last two years, IPL watching has reduced to some extent as audiences are balancing in seeing both cricket IPL as well as their favorite daily shows. According to the figures from Broadcasting Audience Research Council of India (BARC), IPL T20 2016 viewership had a fall week-on-week gradually. That’s where Hindi GECs saw that the interest of people are lessening towards IPL T20 as there are a segment of audiences preferring to watch daily soaps too.

Repeat Telecast’s a Big Option for Soap Lovers

Repeat telecasts of soaps have turned out to be a benefit for Hindi GECs. Also, afternoon slots aided them to keep hold of more viewership. There would be a balance in viewership between upcoming Hindi soaps and IPL 10 matches. The president and head of content studio of leading Hindi GEC, Mr. Gaurav Banerjee conveyed, “New content-driven soaps are being launched for the afternoon slot with distinct storylines and varied backgrounds which will hit a perfect chord with the viewers around that time of IPL 10 in order that the new shows provide the right audience at the right time.” No doubt, IPL has been the greatest events on television, but at the same time GECs have steadily learnt to co-exist with its new Hindi soaps. If IPL gathers more ratings to a certain extent, GECs too have managed to garner ratings through its new show launches. So GECs are least worried this April to showcase their shows.

IPL Popularity among Cricket Lovers (The Indian Express)

Slight Dip of IPL in Viewership

IPL was hugely popular till its sixth to seventh season, but suddenly general people are bored to watch IPL. With each passing year, viewers are lessening in numbers as they aren’t much addicted to these T20 matches. But we never know, with its current 10th season starting from 3rd April and continuing till 26th May 2017, a minor fluctuation in viewership will remain. As IPL comes once a year, many cricket fans and not-so-cricket fans do love to watch matches in stadiums. Many like to skip serial watching as they can follow them on Hotstar and Voot app, and watch late night IPL (8-11.30 pm), especially young guys and men. Today even girls and women too are enthusiastic to watch cricket IPL as they are T20 matches and they are here to support their favorite teams too.

Will it be IPL 10 Fever this April? (Hindustan Times)

Hence, TV portals are anticipated to be the better vehicle this summer season to reach out to their respective audiences. With interesting concepts in shows that are lined-up, Hindi GECs have made sure to switch viewers from IPL towards their new shows. It’s a tough competition to witness the top scorer in TRPs among new television shows and IPL 10! You keep enjoy watching whatever you want on TV! 🙂
