India celebrates its Independence Day nationwide, every year on 15th August. The country became independent on 15th August 1947, hence in order to remember this date, a compulsory holiday is held with a small celebration. This year India will be celebrating its 72nd Independence Day on Wednesday, 15th August at Red Fort, Old Delhi.

The significance of Independence Day

August 15 is commemorated as an annual observance for Independence Day. It is a proud moment for every Indian. On this day, our country acquired freedom after many years of slavery under British rule. This day has been announced as the National and Gazetted Holiday across the country for honoring its independence from the Britishers on 15th August 1947.

On this day people pay tribute to the country’s freedom fighters and the leaders who had fought to make India independent from the Britishers’ hands. Banks, post-offices, National, state and local government offices are closed on 15th August. There might be optional holidays or fixed holidays in private offices or other organizations and businesses might have a half-day closing. Government buildings across the cities are brightened with lights and other buildings are fluttered with tricolor flags. Print, broadcast, and online media promote Independence Day in the form of advertisements, programs, special contests, special discounts, and articles. Movies related to country’s freedom fighters are shown for the people on TV.

Independence Day Celebrations at Red Fort

The 72nd Independence Day is going to be celebrated at Red Fort in Old Delhi on 15th August. On this eve, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind unfurls India’s flag, followed by National Anthem. Then he delivers a speech to the nation at Red Fort. The state capitals and other cities have their flag-hoisting ceremonies as well as cultural programs. School students participate in these programs.

At Red Fort, army soldiers from different battalions perform march-past on 15th August. During the PM’s address on I-day, the all-woman SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team including 36 commandos, will be an important part of the security operation.

The Delhi Police on Friday, 10 August, inducted an all-women Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, consisting of 36 commandos – the first ever by any police force in India – for anti-terrorist operations.

On 15th August, the Army, Navy and Air Force march forward across the Red Fort, passing in front of the President. It is definitely amazing to see the school children execute dances beautifully for the present dignitaries as well as the audience.

Also, kites and balloons fly in the sky that represents the Independence Day. The sky is adorned with multiple kites and balloons in the tri-color shades, thus symbolizing free-spirited India.

The release of the Gold movie on 15th August

Bollywood movie Gold stars Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh, Sunny Kaushal, Nikita Dutta, Dalip Tahil, Jatin Sarna, Bhawsheel Singh Sahni, and Abdul Quadir Amin. It is said that former Indian National hockey team captain and Arjuna Award winner, Sandeep Singh was signed so that he could train the actors of this movie to develop their hockey skills.

The main shooting of the film was executed in Yorkshire and The Midlands, England. The storyline revolves around a true story based on the 1948 Summer Olympics when India just achieved Independence. It portrays outbreaks and struggles that were faced by then hockey players and victory they got amongst the riot chaos. Gold showcases Akshay Kumar who plays the role of Tapan Das, a hockey player-cum-coach who won 3 gold medals under the British rule and is determined to come up with a strong hockey team created in free India, thus presenting it in the Summer Olympics of 1948. Tapan and his teammates face lots of hindrances, yet go on to win medals for the country. This would be a great movie watching on the I-day.

People can watch the Independence Day celebration live on all the News Channels and DD Channel, which is likely to start at 7.30 or 8 am. They can also go out to nearby parks or clubs where the celebrations must be happening with flag-hoisting and programs. They can even go for an outing with their family and friends for lunch or dinner, movie-watch, shopping, long drives, hanging out with friends, etc. They can also watch patriotic movies or any other latest movies coming on TV. One can also buy tricolor small paper flags, or a mini symbol, to have a patriotic feel.
