It was way back in the year of 1950 when Republic Day of India was first celebrated. Time has flown so fast that this year it will be country’s 68th Republic Day. Yes, India will be rejoicing the 68th Republic Day 2017 in great joy and gaiety on Thursday, 26th January. This celebration is in respect of Constitution of India which was put into power in 1950 on this particular day. The morning of 26th January will witness huge crowd at Rajpath in New Delhi gathered to watch the parades, tableau presentations, fighter planes in the sky, President’s speech, and many more.

States involved in performing on the Republic Day

The President of India, Mr Pranab Mukherjee will be hoisting the Indian flag at Rajpath, followed by numerous tableaux from various states exhibiting their traditions to modern warfare technique showcases. The programs will start on 26th January sharp at 9 am. There would be Republic Day parade, performances by 6 ministries of Central Government, and many more excitements waiting for the audiences to rejoice.

Almost 17 states will be seen executing their individual tableaux passing in front of the President Pranab Mukherjee, Chief Guest Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Prime-Minister Narendra Modi, Politicians and huge number of audiences. These states include Gujarat, Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Lakshadweep, Punjab, Odisha, Manipur, Tripura, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. The tableaux from different states adapts to specific theme, portraying social-cultural or economic progress of the states. Before the Republic Day, lots of preparations, decorations are conducted at Rajpath, keeping in mind the safety for 26th January.

Special Arrangements on Republic Day

  • The venue at Rajpath will be beautified with potted plants of date palm in rows so as to greet the chief guest from UAE.
  • The National Security Guard of 140 commandos will debut at Rajpath presenting their remarkable proficiencies at the time of parade which adds activities like National Security Guard anthem singing [‘Hain na hai na Hum Hindustan, Hum rang rang hain, phir bhi sang hain’ written by Poet Gulzar]; a terrific performance shown by anti-hijack team, combat free-fallers, anti-sabotage team, CBRNE team, and deep divers.
  • The Republic Day will also be lead by a group of 179 UAE soldiers parading their troupe forward.

  • The military police daredevils named Shwet Ashwa demonstrate their talents on motorcycles while they move forward, saluting the President at Rajpath parade.
  • The Territorial Army soldiers too will march on the Republic Day at Rajpath.
  • Gujarat tableau: The jhanki or tableau of Gujarat will display the Kutch art and lifestyle. Tableau’s first part will see women doing embroidery works, and the rear part will see cobbler embroidery art, Kutchi camel embellished fabric works, and other significant displays.

  • Delhi tableau: This jhanki will focus on the Model schools; and amendment of school education with better quality increase for the mind-development of children. Delhi tableau will be returning back after three years.

  • Arunachal Pradesh tableau: Yak dance will be represented on the Arunachal Pradesh jhanki which is one of the well-known pantomimes belonging to Mahayana sect of AP’s Buddhist’s tribes.
  • Goa tableau: The front side of Goa jhanki will be designed like a peacock on which a lady of fiber figurine plays ghumat, a percussion instrument created from earthen pot. The Goa jhanki will be based on state’s musical heritage utilizing several dance and musical forms.
  • Haryana tableau: This tableau will focus on the Beti bachao, Beti Padhao [Save daughters, Educate daughters] initiative, hence stretching the awareness of education for girls and their important role in the society.

  • Indian Border Security Force soldiers on decorated camels will march past at Rajpath.
  • School children of Delhi schools will be performing as they dance on the Rajpath in beautiful colors.

  • Indian Army’s huge mechanized columns will pass by saluting the President at Rajpath.
  • Assam tableau: The Assam jhanki will exhibit Guwahati’s Kamakhya shrine. Kamakhya is regarded as one of the biggest shrine for worshipping Shakti.
  • Himachal Pradesh tableau: The Himachal Pradesh jhanki will represent their Pahari art and hand-woven embroidery which is prospered in its Chamba town.
  • Karnataka jhanki: This jhanki will showcase Goravas, the folk dances of Karnataka, after which sword wielding warriors will be dancing on their tableau.
  • Jammu & Kashmir tableau: J&K’s jhanki displays Gulmarg’s winter sports which is a popular tourist destination of the world.
  • Maharashtra jhanki: This jhanki will pay special tribute to the freedom fighter and social reformer, Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak’s 160th birth anniversary.
  • Lakshadweep tableau: The jhanki of Lakshadweep will display the nature tourism as well as adventure sports. The unexplored tourist destination, Lakshadweep can attract audiences for its amazing adventures through this tableau display.

  • Punjab jhanki: The theme of Punjab tableau is Jago, a festival of dance rejoiced before Punjabi wedding. Punjabi participants will be seen doing bhangra on the tableau showing their Punjabi culture.

  • Odisha jhaki: Odisha tableau will showcase their Dola Jatra tradition where Odiya people are daubed in colored powder, while they dance superbly in traditional music.
  • Manipur tableau: Manipur jhanki will focus on their theater tradition, Lai Haraoba which also includes devotees’ and priestess’ devotional dance in front of their local deities.

  • Tripura jhanki: This tableau will display Tripura’s Reang Tribal Dance named Hojagiri. Young girls and women will be seen dancing in a team, nicely balancing themselves with earthen pitchers.
  • West Bengal tableau: The West Bengal tableau will mesmerize the audience with their festivity spirit of Durga Puja, also known as Sharod Utsav.
  • Tamil Nadu tableau: This tableau will display the state’s folk dance “Karakattam” where dancers will be dancing to the drum beats and even balancing greatly with brass pots and a wooden parrot.
