Olympic Medals’ Evolution

When were medals awarded firstly?

Earlier the medals were not a part of the original Olympics Games. All the early Olympic champions won olive branch wreaths in order to honor Greek God Zeus.

Medals were firstly awarded in modern Olympics, 1896, held at Anthens, Greece. But the topper received a silver and olive branch. The athlete who became second got a copper medal, and athlete who acquired the third position received bronze. In the Olympics Games 1900, the winners received trophies or cups. The host country used to decide what it wanted to offer the athletes as award. It is completely up to the host nation. It was only in 1912 when a gold medal was fully gold.

In 1928, one side of the medal has a design of conventional goddess of success which embraces a trophy on her left hand, and also a champion’s crown on her right hand. On the opposite side of the medal, an Olympic champ is exhibited that is held victoriously by a crowd, the Olympic stadium in background.
