Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid is recognized as the holiest festival of Muslims which they celebrate together by offering their prayers and showering merriment. Just after the holy month of Ramadan ended on 5th July, Eid festivity falls which is a Muslim holiday. Ramadan is the holy month of Muslims wherein they keep fast [Sawm]. So Eid-ul-Fitr represents the first day of ‘Shawwal’, the tenth Islamic month.

What is Eid-ul-Fitr?  

Eid signifies festival of breaking fast in Arabic, thus the festival is regarding celebrations. Billions of Muslims across the world celebrate the Eid festival for the next three days. The party celebrations include varied traditions like family and friends gathering to pray and relish together. The significance of Eid-ul-Fitr is divine purely. On this occasion, Muslims thank their Allah whole-heartedly for giving them strength, will-power, and patience during the period of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the one long month of fasting by Muslims every day beginning from sunrise till sunset. It is also considered as one of the five pillars of Islam. They abstain from having a drink, and foods. They increase their prayers offering and reciting of Quran.

How Eid-al-Fitr is celebrated?

Before Eid, Muslim people go for loads of shopping and also buy sweets, food items, and gifts for their family, relatives, and friends. This year the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr by the Muslim people rejoices on distinct dates in different countries.

On the first morning of Eid celebration, huge numbers of Muslim people assemble in the nearby mosques, or gather in open-space for their prayers known as Salat al-Eid. Their Eid prayer comprises of a sermon and a small congressional prayer. After offering prayers, they visit their relatives and friends,   and also have breakfast together. They wear new designed clothes and greet each other as Eid celebration stands as their first day meal in this month.

Together they share and eat delicious dishes made at their homes, like Sheer Khurma, Haleem, Awadhi Mutton Biyani, Mutton Korma, Mutton Boti Kebab, Mutton Do Pyaaza, Badaam Kheer, Chicken Butter Masala, Chicken Pakoda, Chicken Seekh Kebab, Dum Murgh Keema Baingan, Kashmiri Pulao, Mutton Cutlets; and sweets like Sewaiyan, Methi Sewai, Kiwaamee Sevain, Mix Fruit Rice Phirnee, Malai Kulfi, Gajar Halwa.

People hug each other on Eid festival; donate small things to poor people; and offer gifts to the children. Girls wear mehendi [heena] on their hands before the Eid at night. Few people exchange gifts with each other in happiness.

Hence, all the people on Eid occasion greet their loved ones, and take blessings from their elders. Eid represents the brotherhood feeling and unity.
