The whole Nation is at a complete loss of words on hearing the sad news of passing away of our former PM, poet, gentleman, statesman, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. After suffering from a prolonged illness, he breathed last on Thursday, 16 August, 5.05 pm at 93. AB Vajpayee, a Saffron star, led BJP to remarkable electoral victories, also led coalitions at the Centre from 1998-2004, also was the first Non-Congress Prime Minister to finish a full term.

Atal Ji was admitted in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from 11th June and because of his critical condition, he couldn’t be discharged. In the last 9 weeks, his health deteriorated badly, to the extent that he was on life-support as his conditioned literally worsened over the last 36 hours. The doctors tried their level best but all their efforts went into a vein as they couldn’t save him.

1# Pokhran 2 (1998): Pokhran-II [operation Shakti] was commenced on 11 May 1998 along with the ignition of one fusion bomb and two fission bombs. It was again on 13th May the same year when two other fission devices were ignited and that is when PM A J Bajpayee, leading the Indian government stated in a press conference that the country is a full-fledged nuclear state. Though he was aware that the Western world led by the US would get enraged, his belief that their anger would be short permanent has been rightly proved.

2# Ride to Lahore (Feb 1999): The Lahore treaty or the second nuclear control treaty was signed by India’s PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan’s PM Nawaz Shariff in 1988, with a promise to continue using the first treaty, NNAA. The treaty came into effect in the same year.

3# Operation Vijay (Jun-July 1999): The managing of the Kargil war months later exhibited that Vajpayeeji could turn the threat into an opportunity to separate Pakistan and win the world opinion in favor of India. Indian PM even declared Operation Vijay a big success on 14th July 1999.

4# IC-814 Hijacking (Dec 1999): In order to put an end to the hostage crisis in Kandahar hijack, the former PM A B Vajpayee made a surrender before the terrorists and also decided to release out three militants. But unfortunately, they hatched plans and implemented the 9/11 attacks, 2006 Mumbai terror attacks, and the kidnapping and murdering of Daniel Pearl.

5# Agra Summit (July 2001): There was a meet between A P Bajpayee and N Shariff for two days for discussion of nuclear arsenals, Kashmir clash, and cross-border terrorism. 7# Parliament Attack (Dec 2001): In December 2001, 5 terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed thundered into the Parliament, where terrorists and 12 people died. At that time Vajpayee had to take a decision to select a strong political response over the immediate military action.

Also, schools, colleges, and state government offices are shut down whole over the country today. The Indian flag remains half-mast at the President’s house. President Ram Nath Govind, PM Narendra Modi, and other politicians attend the funeral. The SAARC leaders and foreign dignitaries also present.
