Ab de Villiers expressed by tweeting, “After 114 Test matches, 228-ODIs, and 78 T20Is, it’s the right time for others to take over. I have had my turn and also, to be honest, I’m tired.” He even conveyed that he wouldn’t be playing any of the T20 leagues outside his home country, while he kept the option open for the Titans team which he represents in South Africa’s domestic circuit. ABD also conveyed, “It would not be right for me to pick and choose where, when and in what format I play for the Proteas. For me, in the green and gold, it must be everything or nothing.”

His quitting is certainly a big loss for the game and also it leaves a big emptiness for the South African cricket to fill his space. With the rising popularity of T20 leagues, ABD had surely become a truly global star of the game. This year IPL 11, ABD was playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in T20 format, but from next IPL season, he won’t be playing. Of course, IPL fans would miss seeing him play on Indian ground. Though he was at the top of his success ladder, he was grounded and took his stardom lightly and remained a team person always. He was loved and respected by his fellow cricketers and his fans and will always be adored for his outstanding performances on the field.
